The Ritual of Tending What Is

Intention / Purpose

For the moment when healing is uncertain, progress cannot be seen, and there is nothing more to do today.

To distinguish what remains within our care from what lies beyond our control, and to release the burden of having to secure our own healing.

Origin / Context

This ritual arises from the experience of facing a health condition whose course or outcome remains uncertain. Unlike an injury whose healing can be readily observed, some conditions require ongoing care, monitoring, and patience without the reassurance of visible progress.

Raphael, the Great Healer, teaches the distinction between what can be tended and what cannot be commanded.

We seek knowledgeable physicians, follow appropriate treatment, nourish and rest the body, and remain attentive to its needs. Yet even with faithful care, we cannot guarantee an outcome.

The ritual offers a way to live within this uncertainty without surrendering either hope or the sweetness of daily life. It invites us to release the burden of controlling our healing while remaining active participants in our care.

Healing is not always the restoration of what was. Sometimes it is the wise and loving tending of what is.

Items Needed

  • A small candle or lantern

  • The Stone of Healing Hands, if desired

Steps

1. Recognize What Has Been Done. Place your hands over your heart.

I have sought what can be known.

I have done what can be done.

I have tended what can be tended.

2. Release the Accusation. Place one hand gently over your heart.

I will examine my choices without condemning myself.

Where change is needed, I will make it with care.

Where I have been unwise, I will learn.

Where I could not have known, I will offer myself mercy.

My body is not my adversary.

And I will not become its accuser.

3.. Honor What Remains Unknown. Open your hands, palms upward.

There are things I cannot yet know.

There are outcomes I cannot command.

I need not solve tomorrow tonight.

4. Tend the Flame. Look gently toward the candle or lantern.

I will continue to care for this body.

I will welcome wisdom, treatment, nourishment, and rest.

I will not abandon myself in uncertainty.

5. Receive the Present Day. Place one hand upon your heart.

There is still beauty to behold.

There is still sweetness to receive.

There is still life to be lived.

Closing Words

I release what cannot be commanded.

I remain faithful to what can be tended.

May healing unfold wherever it is possible.

May wisdom accompany what cannot be changed.

And may peace find me here, before I know the outcome.

And so it is.

Notes / Variations

Acceptance does not mean refusing change. It means making needed changes without hostility toward oneself. The purpose of reflection is wiser care, not punishment.

The body does not need to be found innocent before it deserves our love.

Healing Sanctuary — Archangel Raphael

We make a place.

We give it our attention.

And we allow the ordinary to become capable of receiving the sacred.
